Ce gaz jaune, d’odeur irritante, réagit avec quasiment toutes les substances et leur confère des propriétés exceptionnelles de plasticité et d’inertie chimique. Ses applications sont innombrables et, en quelques années, le fluor devient un élément incontournable de l’industrie. Il joue aujourd’hui un rôle déterminant dans les procédés de production de l’aluminium, de l’énergie nucléaire et du silicium nécessaire aux nouvelles technologies.
Dans tous les domaines industriels, de la médecine à l’agrochimie, ce sont plus de 600 000 composés qui utilisent ses qualités. Teflon®, Gore-Tex®, anti-graffiti, anti-feu, médicaments anticancéreux, antibiotiques, neuroleptiques, biomatériaux, pesticides, batteries à lithium-ion et piles à combustible (à membranes polymères) n’existeraient pas sans lui.
Mais cet élément quasi magique a ses paradoxes : la production d’aluminium dégage des perfluorocarbones (PFC), difficilement éliminables. Les CFC, utilisés pour la réfrigération, rognent la couche d’ozone. À des doses raisonnables, la présence du fluor dans l’eau renforce l’émail des dents, mais, en excès, provoque de terribles maladies.

Introduction à la génétique moderne / Philippe Monget, Reiner A. Veita

Après la découverte de l’ADN et l’élucidation de sa structure, la biologie et en particulier la génétique, ont vécu plusieurs évolutions majeures. La première vient des biotechnologies de la reproduction, de la possibilité de manipuler les embryons et les génomes pour créer des organismes génétiquement modifiés, avec surexpression ou invalidation de gènes. Une autre évolution majeure a été la possibilité de créer des clones de mammifères, chose que l’on croyait impossible avant la naissance de Dolly en 1997. Les grandes évolutions récentes, depuis les années 2000 sont l’épigénétique, la généralisation du séquençage et du génotypage à haut débit, grâce à de récents progrès technologiques, et à l’utilisation d’outils informatiques de plus en plus puissants.
L’accès à ces séquences a grandement accéléré la recherche des gènes responsables de maladies, et plus généralement de phénotypes, “simples” ou complexes, en analysant la co-ségrégation de ces phénotypes dans des familles informatives, avec des marqueurs moléculaires qui balisent l’ensemble des génomes. Aujourd’hui, l’extrême densité des marqueurs moléculaires permet de faire de la génétique d’association, et de quasiment s’affranchir des familles. Enfin, le séquençage de génomes entiers a également permis de re-dynamiser de “vieilles” sciences passionnantes : la génétique de l’évolution, la physiologie moléculaire comparée et la phylogenèse des grandes fonctions. Il est certain que de nouvelles disciplines nées de nouvelles confrontations verront encore le jour dans un futur proche. (Source : Site de l'éditeur)
